The Queen of Iceni - JD Wetherspoon

Cocktail Bar | Norwich | England | United Kingdom

The "Queen of Iceni - JD Wetherspoon" in Norwich, England, is a modern cocktail bar that is primarily known as a large, versatile pub and is part of the renowned JD Wetherspoon chain. It is distinguished by its central location on the River Wensum and offers both locals and visitors a blend of traditional pub character along with an extensive drinks and food menu. The name of the bar honors the historical figure Boudica, the leader of the Iceni tribe. When the Romans conquered Britain under Emperor Claudius in 43 AD, the Iceni vehemently resisted Roman rule. It is believed that their main camp was located on the grounds of the current Norwich Castle, giving the bar a connection to local history.

The drinks selection at the "Queen of Iceni" is a central part of its appeal and includes a wide range of options that also qualify it as a cocktail bar. The bar takes particular pride in its selection of real ales, which are cask-aged and served by hand, including local beers and rotating guest ales from across the UK. Highlights include international lagers like the Italian Poretti, known for its full-bodied taste and golden color. For cocktail lovers, there is a solid selection of classic mixed drinks that, while not the main feature of the bar, remain popular—such as a refreshing gin and tonic or a zesty mojito. Whisky enthusiasts will also find plenty to enjoy, with a variety of single malts and blends that reflect Scottish tradition. The offering is complemented by a range of non-alcoholic options and soft drinks, making the pub accessible for all age groups.

Culinary-wise, the "Queen of Iceni" stays true to the Wetherspoon tradition by offering an extensive menu that ranges from breakfast to late-night dining. Particularly popular are classics like fish and chips, which features freshly fried fish served with thick chips, as well as the hand-made pies, such as the British steak and ale pie with a rich gravy. Meat lovers can indulge in juicy steaks like the rump steak or the mixed grill, which offers a combination of different meats. Vegetarian options are also available, such as a spicy vegetable curry or a veggie burger, which still maintain the hearty character of pub cuisine. The dishes are known for their generous portions and affordable quality, making the bar a favored spot for a quick meal or a cozy evening out.

The atmosphere of the "Queen of Iceni" is modern and inviting, with a spacious interior spread over two levels, as well as a large riverside terrace that becomes a highlight in nice weather. The decor is functional and straightforward, typical of Wetherspoon pubs, with dark wooden furniture and a large bar that dominates the space. The bar attracts a diverse mix of patrons—from football fans on match days who appreciate the proximity to the stadium, to tourists exploring Norwich, to regulars who enjoy the reliable quality. Particularly on weekends, it gets lively when music videos are shown and the vibe shifts towards nightlife, earning the bar the nickname "Lloyds No. 1," a nod to its party-oriented side. Large screens also broadcast sporting events, enhancing the sociable atmosphere.

The "Queen of Iceni" embodies the Wetherspoon philosophy that focuses on excellent customer service, a wide selection, and good prices. The staff is often praised for their efficiency and friendliness, even when the bar is busy, such as on match days for Norwich City, when they implement a "Home Fans Only" policy and serve drinks in plastic cups. Children are welcome, but a strict rule prohibits minors from being present after 6 PM, making the bar an adult venue in the evenings. The outdoor terrace offers a picturesque view of the River Wensum and is particularly popular in summer, though the weather in England doesn’t always cooperate.

Overall, the "Queen of Iceni - JD Wetherspoon" is a versatile place that combines the essence of a modern British pub with a touch of cocktail bar character. It integrates a rich drink selection, solid cuisine, and an atmosphere that ranges from relaxed to lively, with a nod to local history through its name. For visitors to Norwich, it serves as a reliable destination—whether for an affordable meal, a drink with a view, or an evening full of entertainment. It embodies the Wetherspoon ethos: quality and value for everyone, wrapped in a package that honors the city and its past.

Just popped in today for couple of drinks with a friend but not sure if Stevie Wonder is their cleaner or whether they've sacked them. Toilets need a good scrub with bleach and a scrub brush, the pans are disgusting. Dust and cobwebs in the corners above and on the floor. Sinks need wiping down as water everywhere. Carpets throughout needs a damn good hoover, the stairs are disgusting. All glass surfaces needs wiping down as hand marks everywhere. Staff clearing tables didn't wipe them over when people left just cleared glasses and plates. This isn't just one day lack of cleaning this is months worth. Place is filthy, it's a disgrace.

This witherspoon has so much going for it. Great location, outdoor seating, and big. Unfortunately it seems to be understaffed? So dirty ,tables piled high with dirty plates , etc and it was only midday. I noticed two waitresses bringing food to a table near us you would of thought that would have been an opportunity to clear the table next door but no it was ignored!! So it's really down to training your staff Witherspoon. I can think of other places I'd rather spend my money when I wish to eat out.

I had an all day breakfast while I was waiting for my train, you definitely get value for money, but I ordered an extra black pudding which turned up burnt to a crisp which was disappointing Other than that it was an ok breakfast for a decent price. Staff were really pleasant
